Holiday Coffee 2022 Roundup
2022 has been an excellent year for coffee around our house, getting to know our preferences and dislikes in a vast sea of coffee.
That said, 'tis the season for holiday blends.
In the true holiday spirit, we scoured the internet for quality specialty coffee roasters.
We checked over 70 roasters and analyzed over 55 winter holiday-themed coffees to see the trends for this year.
In this article, we'll break down some of the trends we found and some standouts we're looking forward to.
Finally, as a reference, We'll list all the coffees we discovered along the way and where to get them if you're interested.
Let's get started.
4 coffees with untraditional processes
People are likely familiar with natural or washed processed coffee.
You're probably familiar with honey-processed coffee if you saw our recent article.
The vast majority of the coffees we looked at were washed, sometimes combined with natural.
Several coffees we looked at were listed as washed with a mix of honey process.
Still, there were some other very exciting processes involved in four coffees.
Jax Frost by Atomic was listed as experimental, which excited us for the orange blossom notes.
Sometimes when you see experimental, it's code for the anaerobic process.
The anaerobic process is where coffee is fermented in an environment that lacks oxygen leading to some intense and unique flavors.
2 coffees fell into that category.
Holiday Blend at Oren's Coffee is one such coffee that purports to be unapologetically fruity.
The other is Good Tidings - Sweet Holiday Blend by Red Rooster Coffee.
The flavor notes on these coffees evoke candied fruit sweetness and complexity.
We saw the most curious process with The Holiday Bean coffee at PT's Coffee.
To quote PT's Coffee,
"Nando Diaz's experimental process involves fermenting freshly-harvested coffee cherries with chunks of fresh pineapple. This accentuates the coffee's natural sweetness and juicy body for a truly special treat! We love its interplay of sweet and tart notes with a backbone of nuts and chocolate."
If you like exotic, fruity, intense flavors in your brew, you'll want to try these four.
If you don't care for all this fruit and prefer other flavors...
A little more than half of the coffees we found tasted chocolate.
It's no surprise with coffee flavor notes that chocolate would be among the main themes.
We counted at least 30 coffees with chocolate of some sort in the flavor notes.
Lots were simply dark chocolate, but a few had more descriptive chocolate flavors, such as hot cocoa, chocolate cake, and chocolate nougat.
One that stood out was Verve's Holiday Blend, with prominent notes of chocolate cherries.
'Tis the season for baked goods.
This year's holiday blend coffee tastes included several baked goods.
There were ginger snaps, shortbread cookies, creme brulee, and fruitcakes.
Lume - A Seasonal Winter Roast by Metric stuck out for its yellow cake reference in combination with bright, sweet citrus fruits.
Chestnuts Roasting
Nutty flavors are prevalent in coffee.
To our surprise, chestnut, in particular, was only mentioned 3 times.
That said, there were about 10 mentions of nuts and nut-derived flavor profiles.
We were intrigued by the candied pecan and cranberry combination of the Holiday Blend from Novo.
Spice Season
As you'd expect heading into winter, there was no shortage of spice notes.
We counted over 15 spiced flavors.
Most featured the vague label "baking spices," but there were a couple more specific things, like spice cake and star anise.
Highwire Coffee's Celebration looked promising, pairing baking spices with maple and marmalade.
Speaking of marmalade
A couple roasters did break out the jelly, jam, and marmalade flavors.
Festivity Blend at Temple Coffee Roasters might be good if you're into citrus marmalade and sweet round notes but not the baking spice flavors.
Favorite Coffee Regions for the Holidays
While holiday coffee typically consists of beans from multiple regions, it is nice to know where your beans come from.
The transparency of coffee roasters and the producers they work with is also a sign of good faith and is typically an indicator of quality coffee.
We found the following breakdown of regions represented in the coffees we looked at:
Ethiopia: 27
Guatemala: 13
Kenya: 11
Colombia: 10
Costa Rica: 7
Honduras: 7
Sumatra: 3
El Salvador: 3
Mexico: 3
Papua New Guinea: 2
Peru: 2
Burundi: 2
Democratic Republic of the Congo: 1
There are no surprises here.
Ethiopia is coffee.
Ethiopian natural process coffee represents big fruit.
Other coffees from Ethiopia bring many of the traditional flavors we associate with satisfying coffee.
Many holiday coffee blends prioritize balance so the whole family can drink together.
Mixing washed, and natural coffees from different regions is a great way to achieve that balance.
Speaking of Balance
Most of the coffees we looked at were somewhere in the medium range.
Again, the coffee hipster can share a good cup of coffee with his uncle, who prefers instant without causing a holiday scene.
Were there any single-origin coffees?
About 9 were labeled or implied single-origin coffees with a mix of regions and roasting processes.
It's fun to see a roaster take the same or similar coffee from a region and balance it out for the family using different processes and roasting techniques.
Some roasters couldn't stop at one.
While most roasters made a single holiday-themed coffee, there were a few exceptions.
Anodyne's Merry blend is chocolate-forward, while their bright blend is bright fruit-forward.
Atomic went in a similar direction with 2 coffees; one orange blossom and one ginger snap.
Bird Rock went with a dark roast and a light roast.
Blue Bottle went with a coffee blend, a single origin, and an espresso blend.
Klatch went light, medium, and dark, with the lightest being an Ethiopia single-origin.
Onyx had 2 single-origin coffees, a medium and a dark from Ethiopia and Kenya respectively.
The list goes on, but most of these coffees had a distinct point of view. Hence, they covered their bases by offering other coffees from a different perspective.
Running out of (holly)days.
We'd need about 60 days of Christmas or Hannukuh to try all this holiday coffee.
We will try out a few in this list that we pointed out.
Hopefully, you found a flavor that resonates with what you like in a fresh cup.
