Your Chemex Coffee Recipe
Finding the right coffee to water ratio for your Chemex is key to brewing the perfect cup.
For lighter roasts, a ratio of 1:15 to 1:16 is often ideal.
For medium and dark roasts typically work best with 1:16 to 1:18.
To simplify your brewing, use our Chemex ratio calculator to adjust the ratio based on your roast and taste preference.
How to Use the Chemex Coffee Ratio Tool
This guide will walk you through how to use the Chemex Coffee Ratio Tool to customize your perfect cup of coffee.
Step 1: Adjust the Drink Size (in cups)
Look for the "Drink Size" input field at the top of the tool.
By default, it's set to 1 cup, but you can change this to any number by either typing in the field or using the up/down arrows.
The tool automatically adjusts the amount of water and coffee needed based on the size you select.
For example: If you choose 2 cups, the tool will calculate the total water (in cups, ounces, and grams) and the amount of ground coffee required for that quantity.
Step 2: Choose Your Preferred Drink Strength
Below the drink size input, you'll see three buttons labeled "Weak", "Medium", and "Strong". These buttons let you choose how strong you want your coffee to be.
Click one of the buttons
Weak: If you prefer a lighter, less intense brew.
Medium: For a balanced, standard brew.
Strong: For a more robust, fuller-bodied coffee.
The selected button will turn blue, indicating it's active. Only one button can be selected at a time.
The brew ratio and brew length will adjust based on your choice.
Step 3: Adjust the Roast Level with the Slider
The next section is a slider labeled "Roast Level," which allows you to select between a light, medium, or dark roast.
Drag the slider left or right to choose the roast level:
Left: Lighter roasts (lower temperature, coarser grind).
Right: Darker roasts (lower temperature, finer grind).
You can move between lightest roast and darkest roast for more control over your brew.
The tool will adjust the water temperature, grind size, and brew ratio based on your roast preference.
Step 4: Review Your Custom Recipe
As you make adjustments to the drink size, strength, and roast level, the Recipe Card below will update automatically. Here’s what you’ll see:
Total Water: Displays the total amount of water needed in cups, ounces, and grams.
Total Ground Coffee: Shows the required amount of coffee in grams based on your drink size and brew ratio.
Water Temperature: Suggests the best water temperature in Fahrenheit and Celsius based on the roast level.
Grind Size: Recommends the ideal grind size (coarse, medium-coarse, or medium-fine) depending on the roast level.
Brew Ratio: Displays the coffee-to-water ratio (e.g., 1:15, 1:17) for the perfect extraction.
Brew Length: Provides the optimal brewing time based on your drink strength selection.
Example Use Case:
You want to brew 2 cups of coffee with a medium strength and a dark roast.
Set the drink size to 2 cups.
Click the Medium button.
Slide the roast level all the way to the right for a dark roast.
The tool will update and display a recipe for 2 cups of medium-strength dark roast coffee, including the total water and coffee, ideal water temperature, grind size, brew ratio, and brew length.
